Jan Both- An Italianate Landscape with Travelers on a Path.

With the sun shining through the trees and the way the clouds and the trees glow, this piece caught my eye right away! The people seem to be on a long journey and stopped for rest and food. The water stemming down the mountain and the grass covering the mountain makes this piece look so peaceful. I really love who the artist portrayed the perfect time of day, the evening. Just when the sun is going down and the shadows are covering the ground. This piece shows tranquility and warmth to the viewer.

It seems to be the changing of seasons from summer to fall. Showing the leaves changing to gold and the trees with bare branches, makes this piece show peacefulness.

  1. The composition of this piece is interesting. It makes it seem as if the main character of the story is not the people but the light of the sky. This heliotropic scene certainly gives beautiful color to everything.

  2. The mountain scene is noticed before the people in this painting. It is a very calming scene, like the calm of the end of a long day. It looks like they are traveling a long ways because of the amount of lugadge on the mules. The sky is very strong, I feel like there is going to be a hidden picture in it. The first place this painting leads your eye to is the setting sun area which gives the feeling of calm.

  3. I definitely see the sky before anything else. I love the radial composition, it draws us in and leads us throughout the piece. But I always go back to that tender sunset. Very beautiful, Amy. Good find!

  4. This painting reminds me of the peacefulness I feel when I visit my grandparents in PA. At dusk, the mountains & sky glow in a magical way, and I think this piece captures that very well. I do agree that the sky of this is the main focus, while the people are there just to more of a story. Why would they be leaving what seems to be such a beautiful place?

    1. Good thought - why leave? Is it because they must? Or do things we leave just look better in retrospect?
